| Beware Danger Ahead!! - Book burning bible bashers in the US have their own government in a country that dominates the world, with its armaments and troops - how much worse can it get? Who is doing anything to open the eyes of the public to the evil history and dangerous present of religion? A few scattered activists hampered by their own organisation's pathetic tight-arsed attitudes that's who! |
| *What's
the purpose?
To break the constipated monopoly of the means of communication by the puny British humanist organisation and some of the journals. To stir up some of the stagnation and inward looking attitudes that prevail there and deliver a kick up the pants to get them to open up and promote all those atheists and secular humanists who want to be active, and want their opinions heard in public debate, but are just used to make up the numbers and keep quiet. Atheists who support the Humanist cause for its different approach, still want it to represent the core values of atheism and secularism. Interested people need to be able to get information about the issues, and the range of issues, on which the churches and religions seek to maintain their dominance, and see their national organisation making the running, not trailing behind Religion is so ingrained within our culture that many people do not recognise its all pervasive presence. Many of these issues need clarifying if we are to challenge the religious agenda that still persists. There are so many issues over the whole range of human activity, public policy and public attitudes, political and personal, on which religion shapes our lives, without us even noticing. Nor can the few atheist outlets be allowed to hide their sexist attitudes. It is high time that they realised that sexism, like racism, anti-Semitism homophobia are rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition, and Islam. |
Why the Need The existing Humanist organisations are cramped by an inability to overcome the conservatism of their own members and are unwilling or unable to expand enough to undertake all the activities that are needed in the increasingly demanding market place for information and presentation of the rationale for secularism. Things have deteriorated since the main humanist organisation has, through recruiting lost much of its ideology. Atheism has always been suppressed, now much of the current membership seems unable to open up to the new possibilities for them to explain the need for secular humanism to the wider public. Some are so confined within the security of their little cliques, that they seem afraid, not only of the wider public, but of their own members and supporters. Some are almost entirely dormant and in no way fulfilling the expectations of their founders. Even now they stubbornly refuse to link the many web-sites of independent atheists thinking and writing on the Internet. And seek to suppress rather than promote their own talent, relying solely on a few already well known journalists. The other serious problem is their apparent inability to co-operate with each other where appropriate, in the interests of not only their members but to the advantage of the whole community. No joint advertising? No co-ordination of information, or promotion of print and Internet sources through its journals? So afraid of criticism it only uses closed discussion forums. Even its own members have to ask to join ! Is this a correct assessment? Why not join and find out for yourself!

Numbers of believers are dwindling, yet there is little discussion of many of the issues, on which we have a distinctive point of view. This leaves many of them seriously susceptible to the well practised persuaders of religious cults, sects and other superstitions. Change can be very frightening, but we all have to take on the challenges, some to walk away from the security of their religions, others to walk out from their self-imposed cages of insecurity. |
| Another
fine mess you've got us into God...
Currently the worst situation in front of us is the spectacle of the religious state of Israel, battering the Palestinians, with all the force of its conventional, technically sophisticated weaponry. The 'ungrateful' Palestinians will not accept occupation of the pathetic remnants of isolated pockets of land 'given' to them by Israel. Like Nelson Mandella before apartheid in South Africa, Yasser Arafat, is confined and every attempt made to humiliate him, while his supporters and those who think he is too accommodating to Israel, fight in the only ways open to them, with stones and their lives are called 'terrorists'. The US looks on unable to stir itself out of its own religious cocoon, because of the hold of the Jewish vote on its senators and congressmen. Yes.............Another fine mess.... |

2001 was the year when events made it impossible for all but the most hard-line religionist to divorce the effects of religion from those religions. Unfortunately due to lack of recognition of the very nature of ALL religions in fomenting or preventing the solution of political strife this anti-religious feeling has been used to fuel sectarian and racial hatred. Politicians and clerics have in desperation tried to make it appear that it is only a "few extremists" and that all these religions are really peace loving.... We all know what Christianity can get up to when it becomes dominant, now we see what Islam and Zionism can do. See the views of Humanists of Muslim Origin on the peaceful nature if Islam - |

| What
are the issues?
Education RE....RI....AOW.... Religious Education, Religious Instruction Denominational Schools Compulsory Acts of Worship Rights of children, teachers and society. The See 'Educational Issues' in detail next on site . Constitution Our Royal family are the tip of our political structure, supposedly by 'divine right'. Our national anthem exhorts 'god' to save the queen, and why not, they are mutually supportive institutions! CofE is The Established Church, Bishops in our legislature, House of Lords, as of right. Oath taking in courts can disadvantage those who chose to affirm Civic ceremony Prayers before Parliamentary sittings. Council Meetings, and Local authority chaplains bring religion into local democracy. Civic occasions and national celebrations are marked with religious services thus excluding the non-religious e.g. Remembrance Welfare provision 'Faith Based Welfare' is proposed, and charity Law favouring religion are sanctioned by law. Political solutions not charity is the only real way to address poverty and disadvantage, Convalescent homes and respite care facilities are regularly provided by the religions, not the local or regional health or social services. Defend SECULAR, ACCOUNTABLE PUBLIC SERVICES Health Issues Starvation and HIV/AIDS because of anti-contraception & condom use. The maintenance of pro-choice policy on abortion: availability of all forms of contraception: use of public money to pay religious chaplains: anti-science, pro-superstitious attitudes that lead to reliance on/and some inappropriate use of some 'alternative' therapies. Attitudes of guilt, and shame attached to the body, physical and mental illness as a punishment for sin, the result of 'sins of the fathers' or evil spirits are at the base of fear and rejection of people suffering these disabilities, even the Anglican church still endorses exorcism! and the Catholic Church is still promoting belief in 'Satan' Human sexuality and the law Equal rights of consent, acceptance of homosexuality and the right to recognition of their lifestyles for both men and women. Religious promotion of homophobia. Gender Issues Attitudes as to the place of women in society and stereotyping of women as the temptress or whore, madonna or handmaiden. Politics The religions are not above blackmailing politicians if they dare to oppose church policy on a number of issues, regardless of the parties overall political position and policies. They threaten to tell their 'flock' who to vote for or not to vote for. MPs with large numbers of Moslems or other religions, will not speak out against issues that offend their doctrines for fear of electoral pressure. Media The BBC is required by its charter to deal impartially with all groups and organisation under the law, so how does it get away with promoting religion and censoring the views of atheists, humanists and secularists?
Print Media Refusal by the large retailers to stock atheist journals such as New Humanist, The Freethinker and Sceptics Magazine means that they are not freely available.

Why so few individual Humanist group sites? Look around and see what you see or more likely do not see and wonder why with all these issues to consider do you not see robust action to put things right. Why is the NSS almost alone in putting the case with no equivocation? The churches have all the advantages of premises, money to buy publicity, traditional sources of support and state and media support, but that is no reason why atheist, secularist and humanist opinion should go unheeded. There are organisations, but why, if they do not rise to the challenge leave it up to them? If you know atheists show them some of our sites and if you come across good sites get them linked to the directory site on http://www.secularsites.freeuk.com/ |

is a cascade of information on the web, we are no longer held back by the
censors and self-censors of the traditional media.
Now as never before we can express our views without being gagged or misrepresented by the clerics and those who still have faith in gods and holy books. Now we can say that we do not believe in all these superstitions and why, without having our words twisted or our motives misconstrued. The traditional organisations dip their toes into the water but appear to be afraid to plunge in and promote its use by their supporters. If you would like to communicate with this site:- * |

Spare
a thought
We in Britain have our problems, but they are as nothing compared with the suffering in Muslim counties in which Sharia law is enforced. In these countries there are issues of life and death, bodily mutilation, suppression and oppression of human rights and political freedom. Abuses of people we can only watch with a mix of frustration and sorrow. Every war has a religious element, it may be the direct cause or the reason why the protagonists are split and therefor unable to work through the political solutions. Frequently disguised as 'culture' many religious practices and attitudes are given the status of being beyond criticism. It is the women of Muslim Countries who have paid the price of Islam. Imprisoned by the Burka, enslaved and starved by being unable to work or study, killed for adultery or if they complain of rape. How much more should they suffer. |

| Crime and Punishment
The excesses of retribution, punitive regimes in prisons, rather than restorative justice and rehabilitation come from religions? The ideas of evilness and the devil give justification. The bible is as full of harsh punishment as forgiveness, but not a rational approach to the subject In prisons money is spent on chaplains but not on hygiene, health or useful employment and payment of debts. A good word from the chaplain is worth getting converted for too, if it means earlier parole! Religion and its place in history Much is made of religions supposedly benign and progressive influence on society throughout history as if that was the only view. The Church kept 'learning' for its own purposes for centuries, until capitalism required a literate work-force. It used education, medicine (such as it was) and charity, to promote itself, and still does both at home and abroad, and conspired with kings and military for their mutual benefit. They levied compulsory tithes to pay their staff and build their churches. Tortured heretics and burnt witches. Religions work tirelessly to maintain their own privileged position in society. They kept women out of education, government and professions, colluded with oppressive macho regimes, tolerated violence against women and suppressed their views as they still do today.
What a historical heritage! ____________________ |

Religious Instruction there is no place in
education for the teaching of opinion as fact. For those who think
religious indoctrination is acceptable it must be left to the home and the
church, and not the state or in school.
Compulsory Act of Worship It is unacceptable
in a multi- cultural society that those charged with the care and
education of children, should be required to promote the worship of any
one religion over another, nor the promotion of religion over systems of
non-belief. For schools to be required to express support for religion is
against the cohesiveness of society and respect for all life
stances.
Denominational Schools The social effects of
segregating children into religious schools, must be well enough
documented by now to make it obvious to most people that it is potentially
harmful. It is socially divisive and it should be no part of a modern
western democracy to pay out of public funds for the promotion of
sectarianism and religion. Segregating children by race or religion is a
recipe for social strife.
Religion and Morality Morals are rooted in
society and there are very good reasons why people should comply with the
practice of good behaviour and 'morality'. If morality is assumed to be a
function of religion, as people move away from religion, there is a
temptation to think that morals do not matter. Alternatively there is the
danger that outmoded religious attitudes, are confused with morality,
leading to illiberal, punitive and authoritarian attitudes that have been
shown to be against the best interests of human beings and society.
This is an issue of human rights
Children have a right to be taught facts as facts
and opinion as opinion. It is an abuse of their young minds to instruct in
a biased way on any subject.
Teachers have a right to practice their profession
without being discriminated against on ground of their religious or other
beliefs, e.g. whether they are heterosexual or not.
Parents have a right to expect unbiased education
and not have to exclude their children from religious activity, be it acts
of worship, or 'harvest festivals' or 'nativity plays' where these are
conducted in such a way as to promote one view of religion.
Society has a right to expect public education to
be honest and not biased towards one religion or against non-belief.
